A Completely True Story That Definitely Happened Exactly Like This
It started, as most great stories do, with a trail map that looked much simpler than it turned out to be and a level of confidence that was not entirely supported by the evidence.
Dave had been hiking for forty-five minutes. He had a water bottle, a granola bar, and the unshakeable conviction that he was, in fact, a nature person. He had watched three documentaries about bears. He knew things. He was prepared.
The bear had been napping.
This is the part that doesn't get enough attention in the wildlife encounter literature: bears are often just napping. They are not lurking. They are not plotting. They are doing what any reasonable creature does on a Tuesday afternoon in the woods, which is find a comfortable spot and close their eyes for a while. This particular bear had found an excellent spot — a little hollow behind a fallen log, dappled light, good drainage, zero foot traffic.
Until Dave.
What happened next lasted approximately one and a half seconds and felt like forty-five minutes. There was a moment of eye contact. There was a sound from the bear that Dave would later describe as "extremely opinionated." There was a sound from Dave that he would prefer not to describe at all. And then there was a great deal of very fast movement in opposite directions, after which both parties found themselves somewhere else entirely, hearts pounding, reconsidering their afternoon plans.
Dave made it back to the trailhead in record time. The bear went back to sleep. Neither of them mentioned it to anyone. (Dave mentioned it to everyone.)
The moral of the story is: make noise on the trail, carry bear spray, and know that if you spend enough time in the woods, the woods will eventually have opinions about you. Also: the bear was fine. Dave was fine. Everyone was fine. It was, in the end, exactly the kind of story that is terrifying in the moment and absolutely hilarious approximately six hours later.
This shirt is for Dave. It's for everyone who has had a moment in the wild that did not go according to plan and came out the other side with a story worth telling. It's for the hikers, the campers, the hunters, the people who love the outdoors enough to keep going back even after the outdoors has made its feelings very clear.
Wear it on the trail. Wear it around the campfire. Wear it anywhere you want to signal that you are the kind of person who has been there, survived it, and is already planning to go back.
Make noise. Carry spray. Wear the wild.
