The Shirt He Almost Left Behind

Marcus almost didn't pack it.

It was folded at the bottom of his duffel — the olive one with the watercolor scene on the chest — and he'd told himself he was bringing practical clothes this trip. Base layers. Quick-dry. Nothing sentimental.

But something made him tuck it in at the last minute.

He didn't wear it until the third night, when the hard miles were behind him and the campsite felt earned. He pulled it on just as the sun dropped behind the Cascades, and that's when it happened — the meadow in front of him looked almost exactly like the shirt on his chest. The elk. The stream catching the last of the light. The tent glowing amber in the dusk.

His daughter noticed first.

"Dad," she said, pointing at his shirt, then at the meadow. "You're wearing right now."

He looked down. Then back up. And laughed — the kind of laugh that only comes when a place gets into your chest and stays there.

He wore it every evening after that. Not because it was warm. Because it reminded him that some places don't let you go. And maybe that's the whole point.
