The Yarn Incident
It started as one ball of yarn.
This is always how it starts.
Kitten One found it first, which was a matter of being in the right place at the right time and having absolutely no impulse control. One tap. Just to see what it would do. The yarn, as yarn does, rolled. This was the most interesting thing that had ever happened.
Kitten Two arrived approximately four seconds later, drawn by the sound of Kitten One's enthusiasm, which is a sound that can be heard from two rooms away and translates roughly to: something is happening and I am involved in it. Kitten Two assessed the situation, determined that there was not enough chaos yet, and immediately made it worse.
Kitten Three had been asleep on the couch. Kitten Three is always asleep on the couch. But something — some ancient, primal instinct encoded in the DNA of every cat that has ever lived — woke Kitten Three up at the exact moment the yarn situation reached critical mass. Kitten Three arrived at a full sprint, which is impressive for someone who had been unconscious eleven seconds ago, and contributed to the proceedings in a way that can only be described as decisive.
What followed was not a tangle so much as a collaboration. A joint project. A shared creative vision that happened to involve approximately forty feet of yarn, three kittens, and a complete reorganization of the living room. The yarn went under the couch. The yarn went over the coffee table. The yarn went around Kitten Two's left ear in a way that Kitten Two seemed genuinely unbothered by. The yarn went places yarn was never meant to go.
When it was over — and it was over only because all three kittens simultaneously decided they were done, which is the only way anything involving kittens ever ends — they sat in the middle of the wreckage looking extremely pleased with themselves. As well they should. They had done something remarkable. They had turned one ball of yarn into an art installation.
This shirt is for everyone who has come home to a yarn situation. For the cat people, the knitters, the people who bought a ball of yarn and then looked away for thirty seconds. For anyone who has ever looked at three kittens in a pile of chaos and thought: I cannot be angry. This is objectively impressive.
Wear it to the yarn store. Wear it to the cat café. Wear it anywhere you want to signal that you understand, on a deep and personal level, exactly what happened here.
One ball. Three kittens. No regrets.
